in a family of twelve you can get lost in the faces
hand-me-down clothes and worn out shoes
no extra money for frills or fancy laces
fading now are the crystal clear memories of youth

her name is Caroline my mother's mother
she's lived a long long time but time has been kind to her
somehow I never asked what has helped her make it through
when so much time has passed I hope I'm lively too

my memory of her is that she always looked the same
through all of the changes in both of our lives
not quick to pass judgement or find someone to blame
